RISE & Read Book Club

Books provide powerful narratives for shedding light on gender equity issues and the strategies for solving them. IWL’s RISE & Read Book Club connects women and men around new ideas and experiences from some of the world’s most powerful stories. These affinity groups provide safe spaces to discuss big ideas and experience new perspectives. The selected books help readers understand the world differently so they can go out and change it for the better.

Ready to join? Here's how it works:

Find your RISE & Readers

Coffee and Book.png

Put together a group of RISE & Readers (8-12 members is ideal). If your group is centrally located, meet in person. If not, we've certainly learned over the past year there's not much we can't do (and do well) virtually.

Flying solo? Email to be connected with other RISE & Read groups. You can also use this email to make updates to group members after registering.

Organize the group

Select a member to be your organizer. Schedule a virtual or in-person gathering. At your first meeting:

  • Get to know one another if you don't already

  • Give your group a name

  • Decide on meeting dates/times

  • Determine group roles

  • Agree on how you'll communicate (e.g., email, text, Slack)

Register your group with IWL. Provide your group's name, members, and contact information so everyone receives RISE & Read information from IWL.

Read IWL's monthly book selection

IWL will announce a monthly book selection to help us RISE personally and professionally. RISE & Read books encourage members to learn, move past our challenges, and get out of our comfort zones.

We'll announce the RISE & Read book of the month at the close of our seasonal RISE Series webinars the second Tuesday of each month.

We plan to showcase a few book authors as part of our series. Email your book suggestions to

The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance—What Women Should Know

Confidence. We want it. We need it. But it can be maddeningly enigmatic and out of reach. Is confidence hardwired into the DNA of a lucky few, or can anyone learn it? Which is more important: confidence or competence? Why do so many women, even the most successful, struggle with feelings of self-doubt? Is there a secret to channeling our inner confidence?

In The Confidence Code, journalists Katty Kay and Claire Shipman examine how a lack of confidence impacts our leadership, success, and fulfillment. They argue that while confidence is partly influenced by genetics, it is not a fixed psychological state. You won’t discover it by thinking positive thoughts or by telling yourself (or your children) that you are perfect as you are. You also won’t find it by simply squaring your shoulders and faking it. But it does require a choice: less people pleasing and perfectionism and more action, risk taking, and fast failure.

Inspiring, insightful, and persuasive, The Confidence Code shows that by acting on our best instincts and by daring to be authentic, women can feel the transformative power of a life of confidence.

Best-Selling Author

Wild Hair: A Courageous Woman's Guide to a Bold and Authentic Career

In her new book Wild Hair, Tracy notes, “It’s impossible to balance work and life, because for most of us, work is a part of life, not something separate that we can adjust on the fly to make the scales even out.”

In this session, she’ll share why it's not about work. It’s about you, your values, and alignment between the two.

Tracy provides powerful lessons for:

  • Embracing life's tests

  • Living with authentic alignment

  • Building the needed support to grow from crucible moments

Tracy knows how to bring out the best in people. Learn how to navigate life's crucible moments and find a better sense of self and well-being along the way.
